Onion prices double in a week in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Onion prices are going through the roof. They have doubled since last week. Onion which was sold at Rs 20-26 a kg a week ago now sells at Rs 40-43 a kg.

Onion supply to the market has been halved on account of recent heavy rains, the market sources said.

Provisional stores, push-cart vendors, and others selling onions on trollies sell the commodity at Rs 40-43 a kg, they said.

According to Market committee grade-I Secretary Chandrasekhar, the Malakpet wholesale onion market buys onion from Maharashtra, Kurnool, Mahbubnagar and Tandur. The normal delivery of 70 lorry-loads of onions has been halved in the past 10 days.

He predicted that the shortage of onion and its import would continue for another month or so.
