People demand stringent punishment against mob lynching

New Delhi: The entire minority community and several other groups in the country are deeply saddened at the mob lynching of Tabrez Ansari in Jharkhand three days ago.

They are also worried about the future of Muslims who are being targeted in the name of selling cows for slaughter and hiding beef in their homes. When the mobs find that these accusations cannot be proved they are resorting to describing the alleged suspects as criminals and house breakers. The mob does not hand over the so-called suspect to the police. It takes law into its own hand and starts beating up the person and forcing him to say Jai Sri Ram and Jai Hanuman.

In the case of Ansari, they did not spare him of the thrashing with iron rods and wooden batons even when he said Jai Sri Ram several times.

The objective of such mobs, it is obvious, is to spread terror in the hearts of the minority community by beating them to death. At least half a dozen persons in Jharkhand and other states have been lynched to death since the BJP led NDA took oath of office a few weeks ago.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is as silent on the issue as he was during the reign of NDA-I. The new Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah who said to be the most powerful politician after PM Modi has also said nothing on this subject, though the matter is directly related to the portfolio he is in-charge of.

The beating to death of Tabrez is a case has unfortunately become a norm. First he was caught by a mob, beaten up brutally and forced to raise slogans like Jai Sri Ram and Jai Hanuman. The police arrived on the scene when Tabrez has fallen unconscious. They took him into custody on the trumped up charge that he was thief and threw him in the police station cell. It is not known whether he was beaten there too. But in the morning Ansari died in the custody of police.

Perturbed over the series of attacks, the Muslim community is asking: How long the Muslims will be targeted, beaten up, tortured and killed in the country? Though Jharkhand has emerged as the most notorious of all states in carrying out such crimes, UP, Rajasthan, MP and Haryana, among others, also figure prominently.

Meeran Hyder, a social activist, said that Tabrez was working as a welder in Pune and had gone home to celebrate Eid. On the way in a bus he was asked about his name which he gave without suspecting any wrong doing. The next thing he saw was an attack by a couple of persons. More people joined in beating him up.

A member of the organization called United against Hate, Shariq Hussain, said on his Facebook wall that Hindu terrorism has reached its peak. “Every person who believes in humanity should come forward to save the country from hate mongers and hate crime perpetrators,” he said.

There are others that are demanding a stringent law against mob violence and wanted the perpetrators to be severely punished.

There are still others who want the Muslims to gather in Delhi for demonstration against mob violence. They should demand the Prime Minister to bring about a bill on the subject at the earliest, they said.
