Chennai: A photographer checks noise level Poonamallee High Road, near Chennai Central Railway Station at 10:17 AM, amid the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown, in Chennai, Wednesday, April 29, 2020. Noise levels in our cities have never been as low as they have been in the current lockdown. PTI photographers across the country used some basic mobile phone apps to check sound level at city landmarks during office rush hour, that were busy and hence noisy not so long back. Some of our public places were nearly as quiet as a library, busy crossings having noise levels akin to conversation in a restaurant. Decibel or dB, is a measure of sound. On an average, a whisper can be 15 dB, a library 40 dB, normal conversation 60 dB, loud music indoors 70dB, car horn 110 dB, a rock concert 120 dB, a firecracker 140 dB, and a jet take off (at 25 m) as much as 150 db. Anything above 70 dB is considered annoying and above 80 dB to cause damage depending on level of exposure. Noise is known to have an impact on our health, causing stress, lowering of immunity, sleep disorders and even heart ailments and high blood pressure on prolonged exposure. (PTI Photo/R Senthil Kumar)
