Priyanka Gandhi enters active politics; named in-charge of eastern UP

New Delhi: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday appointed his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as party General Secretary in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh.

She will take charge in the first week of February, a Congress statement said.

Former PM Rajiv Gandhi’s daughter Priyanka has campaigned for Rahul and Sonia in their Lok Sabha constituencies of Amethi and Rae Bareli, respectively, however, she has previously not held any key position in the Congress. She finally marked the formal entry into active politics after the announcement made by the Indian National Congress on January 23.

Ahead of the general election expected to be held in April-May, Congress has announced its office bearers. While Member of Parliament (MP) Jyotiraditya Scindia has been appointed the AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh (West), leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has been appointed AICC General Secretary for Haryana. KC Venugopal will serve as AICC General Secretary (Organisation) besides continuing as the state in-charge for Karnataka.
