Hyderabad: The demand for water tankers for domestic usage has sharply increased owing mainly to depletion of groundwater levels. Borewells are drying up. In fact, several localities in the city have reported that they have not been able to get any water from bore wells.

Government officials have said that the groundwater situation in the city has become precarious.

They have said that even when they wanted to get water tankers to the citizens, there are houses located in very narrow by-lanes or they do not have any access roads.

Hafeezpet in Miyapur area is one of the neighborhoods where the residents are going without water for several days. “We need about 25 tankers daily. But the department is supplying about 8 to 12 water tankers. There is no way we can get the required amount of water except to buy from the market which is extremely expensive,” Syed Ifteqar Ahmed, President of Prem Nagar Welfare Group, told Siasat.com.

Ifteqar Ahmed said, “Whenever the water tankers arrive it takes more than an hour for the vehicle to reach the inner parts of the newer colonies. They would take around the same time to return. Perhaps, this is one of the reasons why the department is not sending the required number of water tankers to our area.”

Vijay Kumar Reddy, Revenue Director of HMWSSB, said that about six million gallon water is being supplied by the board to the citizens across Hyderabad. Still, the board is not able to meet all the requirement.

He said about 800 water tankers are registered with the board that makes about 6000 trips daily.

Explaining the problems faced by the board he said that in many localities there are no sumps. Even if they do have their capacity to collect the entire water from the tanker is insufficient. People who have smaller sumps want the staff to wait until the water is uploaded into the overhead tanks. “All these problems cause massive delays and difficulties and we get the blame,” he added.
