Siddipet medical college authorities and students at loggerheads

Hyderabad/Siddipet: Nearly 300 students of Government Medical College in Siddipet have been staging protests for the past two days demanding basic amenities in their college and hostel.

The students alleged that the college does not have basic facilities like drinking water, electricity, transport facilities, a proper mess or library. The students boycotted their classes on Saturday and gave a representation to the authorities of the college.

On Sunday, the student demonstrated at their hostel. A proposal for a new college on a campus was approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI) this year based on satisfactory facilities and standards.

However, the officials seem to have a different take on the situation as it is students who are complaining about the sub-standard facilities and the officials’ alleged negligence.

A student said, “We are not given quality food when we ask for proper facilities. They threaten us and ask us to vacate the hostel. That too, We have already paid a non-refundable amount to the college.”

He further adds, “It has become very tough to attend classes on time because we don’t even have proper transport facilities.”

The students have also alleged that the library is not well equipped. Female students have alleged that the college authorities, as well as the principal, are imposing an unwritten curfew specifically upon them.

A second-year medical student under the condition of anonymity revealed, “Our principal is targeting students who raise issues, be it regarding food or facilities. “If a female student speaks up, she will be further humiliated.”
