NEW DELHI: Eleven people have been arrested and two police officers have been suspended in connection with an alleged mob lynching of 24-year-old Tabrez Ansari in Jharkhand’s Saraikela-Kharsawan, reported NDTV.
Tabrez was attacked by a mob on suspicion of having stolen a motorbike on June 18. He was beaten up mercilessly for hours and allegedly forced to say, “Jai Shree Ram” before being handed over to the police.
He was first admitted to Sadar hospital yesterday morning and then referred to Tata Main Hospital, Jamshedpur where he succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital on June 22.
In a video of the incident that went viral, Tabrez was heard pleading and is seen being forced to chant religious slogans of “Jai Shree Ram” and “Jai Hanuman.
Family of the deceased on Monday demanded compensation and a government job for his wife.

The disgruntled family also demanded that the perpetrators be tried under Section 302 (Punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the case. “We have formed an SIT to probe into the matter… and it has already conducted raids in the area on Sunday night,” Superintendent of Police Karthik S said.
Tabrez’s family has alleged that the attack was communal because he had a Muslim name.
“He was mercilessly beaten as he was Muslim. I don’t have anybody, no in-laws. My husband was my only support. I want justice,” Shahista Parveen, Ansari’s wife said.
