United Nations: US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he wanted to strike a “magnificent trade deal” with Britain, which has been pitched into crisis over its planned exit from the European Union.

“We stand ready to complete an exceptional new trade agreement with the UK that will bring tremendous benefits to both of our countries,” Trump told the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“We are working closely with Prime Minister Boris Johnson on a magnificent trade deal,” added Trump, who headed following his UN speech into a bilateral meeting with the British leader.
Trump, who has been a strong supporter of Brexit, stressed to world leaders that “the future belongs to sovereign and independent nations.”
Johnson, meanwhile, vowed to press ahead with plans to leave the EU on October 31 — despite a damning Supreme Court ruling on Tuesday that found his decision to suspend parliament unlawful.
The ruling came after a series of defeats in parliament that had curbed Johnson’s plans to leave the EU at the end of next month even without a divorce deal with Brussels.
Johnson told British media he “strongly disagreed” with the court decision but said he would respect it.
Brexit referendum
Three years after the 2016 Brexit referendum, Johnson has insisted Britain must leave the EU without further delays, but lawmakers fear the disruptive impact of exiting without a deal with Brussels.
Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of Britain’s main opposition Labour party, led calls for the prime minister to step down after the court judgement.
