UGC directs 40 universities including AMU to implement 10% reservation for economically weak

New Delhi: University Grants Commission (UGC), the Higher education regulatory body has directed all the Central Educational Institutions, including Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), to implement the 10 per cent reservation for the economically backward in the general category.

UGC, in a letter to the Central Educational Institutions, directed them to implement reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWSs) for admission, in accordance with 124th Amendment of the Constitution of India. It has also asked the institutions to display the scheme details on the website of the institution as soon as possible.

The circular issued by the UGC stated, “You are further requested to furnish the seat matrix, programme wise, along with possible financial requirements to UGC before 31st January 2019.”

AMU registrar Abdul Hamed said legal opinion will be sought regarding the implementation of r 10 pc reservation to the weaker section of the general category.
