Vattepally incense makers are an example of women empowerment

Hyderabad: In the crowded streets of Vattepally in Hyderabad’s Old City, a group of six women get together and work meticulously in making Agarbattis (Incense Sticks). A job they have continued to do since their childhood, they are major bread-winners for their respective families.

One among them is Shahzaad Begum, who earns about Rs. 150 per day. Speaking to Siasat.com she said, “We are paid on the quantity basis. Per kg, we get Rs. 15.”

Even that little livelihood is hit after the COVID-induced lockdown shut many small businesses.
