When Kader Khan lost films for not addressing Bachchan “Sir ji”

MUMBAI: An old video that has resurfaced online that shows veteran Bollywood actor-writer Kader Khan talking about how his and Amitabh Bachchan’s decades-old legendary friendship soured.

In the short video clip posted in 2012, the actor of immense talent says, “I used to always call him Amit. Once a producer from the south came and asked, ‘Have you met the Sir ji?’ I asked, ‘Which sir ji?’ He said, pointing at Amit ji, ‘that tall man.’ Amit ji was coming. I said, ‘He’s Amit. When did he become sir ji?’ (He said) ‘We call him sir ji.’ Since then everyone started addressing him as sir ji.”

“How can anyone call their friend, their brother from any other name? It is impossible. I couldn’t do it and since then our equation was never the same. I was not in Khuda Gawah. I was writing Ganga Jamunaa Saraswati but then left it midway. There were several other films that I had begun work on but quit.”

According to journalist and author Yasser Usman, after Salim-Javed, it was Kader Khan, who was behind Bachchan’s biggest hits and most popular dialogues/ roles like ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikander, Amar Akbar Anthony, Sharabi, Lawaris, Satte Pe Satta, Naseeb.’

After the cinema thespian’s death on December 31 after a prolonged illness, Bachchan was among the first celebs to offer condolences on social media. “Kadar Khan passes away .. sad depressing news .. my prayers and condolences .. a brilliant stage artist a most compassionate and accomplished talent on film .. a writer of eminence ; in most of my very successful films .. a delightful company .. and a mathematician !! (sic),” he tweeted on Tuesday.

Khan, also a Quran scholar is survived by his wife Hajra, son Sarfaraz, daughter-in-law Shaista and grandchildren.
