Over 20,000 cases of crime against women in 2009

Hyderabad, December 31: Crime against women continues to be on the rise and so is the case with economic offences while the Naxal activity was lowest when compared the to last one decade. The number of road accidents too have gone down, slightly.

This in nutshell was the crime, law and order scenario in 2009.

Lauding the anti-extremist work done by the Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) and Greyhounds, Director General of Police RR Girish Kumar said that though the Naxal activity was the lowest in the last decade, they continue to keep utmost vigil.

“Taking into consideration the extremist violence in the neighbouring states (Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra among others) we are keeping utmost vigil,’’ Girish Kumar told a press conference today.

Giving the details about the annual crime scenario in the State, the DGP said that crime against women had increased.

As per the statistics, a total of 20,088 cases of crime against women were reported in 2009 when compared to 19,909 in 2008 and 17,646 in 2007.

There were 1,059 incidents of rape reported this year as compared to 1,026 last year, 4,171 cases of outraging of modesty as against 3,775 last year, 1,080 cases of abetment to suicide was reported this year as against 1,018 last year.

“There is an increase of 19.23 per cent in crime against women amd that is due to free registration of crime,’’ the DGP said.

With regard to economic offences, 7,913 cases were reported (up to November 2009) as against 7,567 cases last year recording an increase of 4.57 per cent.

The DGP said that the State police achieved success in anti-Maoist operations.

Several top cadres including Patel Sudhakar Reddy, Central Committee member and Central Military Commission member was among those killed in exchange of fire.

In a joint-operation, the State police and Jharkhand police arrested Narla Ravi Sharma — incharge of military affairs of Bihar and Jharkhand Special Area Committee — along with his wife Narla Anuradha.

The number of extremists killed this year was 16 while no policeman was killed. The number of incidents stood at 56 when compared to 96 last year.

The total number of extremists arrested is 326. Girish Kumar said that 19 persons lost their lives this year in political and faction violence at various places.

With regard to ISI activities, the DGP said that there was only one incident wherein two unknown persons opened fire on a police constable and a home guard at Falaknuma on May 18, the second anniversary of Mecca Masjid bomb blasts.

“The anti-terrorist force, Octopus, is being re-organised as a commando unit on the lines of National Security Guards and about 200 commandos have been trained this year.

We will be acquiring land for setting up a centre for Octopus and NSG,’’ Girish Kumar added.
