Pak army assures protection of constitution

The Pakistani army has assured the government that it will protect the constitution, even as news agencies claimed that the army had given Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif an ultimatum of 48 hours. Pakistan Federal Defence Minister Khwaja Asif told the media of the assurances he received from the army, pointing out that Nawaz Sharif was elected democratically. However, The Dawn claimed that the army was against Sharif and had given him an ultimatum of 48 hours. On August 20, the Pakistani army, in a statement, had declared that it would not interfere in the political crisis, which was a result of the protests led by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek parties. Both parties are calling for the resignation of Sharif. (ANI with inputs)
