13 year old commits suicide after losing 100 rupee note

New Delhi: 18-year-old Shivam spent a night searching for a lost 100 rupee note, after which he committed suicide when he couldn’t find it.

A resident of a low-income locality in east Delhi’s Kalyanpuri, worked as a waiter at a wedding reception and was paid Rs 300, police said.

After work on his way home, he lost one of the three hundred rupee notes and became inconsolable. While looking for the money, he kept saying he would kill himself if he didn’t find it, neighbours told police.

At around 8.30pm on Tuesday, Shivam’s father Jaishu, a daily-wager, knocked on the door of his rented house but no one answered it, police said.

He broke it open with neighbours’ help and found his son hanging from the ceiling.

“We found no suicide note but neighbours told us that he was upset over losing money,” an investigating officer said. “He used drugs and could have taken his life under influence. The body has been sent for post mortem.”

Shivam didn’t have a steady job but worked part-time in housing societies in Mayur Vihar. He is survived by his parents and a younger sister.
