140 water filling points made functional in Delhi

Drinking Water

New Delhi:The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) today made 140 water filling points functional to feed tankers which would be sent across the city, reeling under an unprecedented water crisis due to the Jat stir in neighbouring Haryana.

Water Minister Kapil Mishra reviewed the contingency plan for water management in West, North, North-west, Outer and Central Delhi and said tankers will deliver water at 663 points to partially meet the shortage of 480 million gallons per day (MGD).

“These points will keep rotating. Plan is to cover around 2,000 points by evening tomorrow,” Mishra said.

In the meeting, DJB informed the Minister that it has made 140 filling points functional, creating 14 new filling points overnight, where tankers will be filled up all through the night.

“DJB’s entire tanker fleet will be pushed out without delay starting from 6 AM onwards. All through the day tankers will be continuously filled up and rushed out to deliver water in the deficient areas,” an official statement said.

The DJB supplies around 900 MGD of water daily out of which around 600 MGD of raw water come from Munak Canal.

“The shortage of 480 MGD of water in the city cannot be met fully by any contingency plan,” the DJB said.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said that even if Haryana releases water immediately, it will take at least 24 hours to restore the supply.
