Kumbakonam: About 156 sovereigns of gold jewellery were stolen from the house of an NRI at a locality in the city, police said.

The NRI, working in Dubai, had gone to Athikadai village in Tiruvaur district with family members yesterday to perform the last rites of his father-in-law.

Neighbours this morning noticed the main door left ajar and informed police. Sniffer dogs were pressed into service.

The family returned this evening and confirmed that 156 sovereigns of gold jewellery had been stolen.

Police said they are ascertaining the exact value of the stolen jewellery.
