South Central Railway (SCR) has installed CCTV surveillance systems at 42 stations by the end of 2016 to control crime on the railway premises. Proposals have been finalized to install 1,938 CCTV cameras in 78 stations on the Zone through a special sanction of Rs 34.63 crore under Nirbhaya Fund.
Under Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, littering of railways premises is viewed seriously and 21,127 persons found littering were penalized and realized Rs 42 lakh from them, said Sanjay Sankrityayan, Inspector General-cum-Chief Security Commissioner of SCR Railway Protection Force (RPF).
Sanjay Sankrityayan stated that ensuring safe and secure travelling of passengers is done religiously on the Zone. Intensive checks are being carried out regularly in trains and stations to provide hassle-free and secure rail journey to the passengers. The RPF was escorting 200 vulnerable long-journey trains every night for safety and security of women and disabled passengers, said the Chief Security Commissioner interacting with the media today at Rail Niliyam, Secunderabad. SCR GM Eswara Rao, Addl. Chief Security Commissioner, RPF, SCR, and Senior RPF officials were also present.
During the year 2016, RPF received 732 complaints through all India Security Helpline number 182. All of these complaints were attended and rendered timely assistance to resolve the grievances said the Chief Security Commissioner and called upon the media to create awareness on the Security Helpline number 182 for optimal and judicious utilization of the service. He asked the people to be vigilant in station premises and in trains regarding any unattended luggage or any nuisance issue and any if observed shall be brought to the immediate notice of the RPF. Timely sharing of information with RPF will go a long way in ensuring safety and security of passengers added the Chief Security Commissioner. RPF detected Rs 4.54 crore worth of property under IPC, Customs, Forests & other Acts during the year 2016. Constant vigil and other pro-active measures taken have reduced unauthorized carrying of gold, silver, narcotics etc., through Railways.
In regards to rescue and rehabilitation of run away children, RPF in coordination with local NGOs rescued 813 run away children and have been re-united with their families. In order to curb the menace of unauthorized persons/touts and criminal elements in stations and trains, special drives were launched resulting in arrest of 134 touts, 1.09 lakh unauthorized hawkers were prosecuted. RPF has also apprehended around 400 criminals, who were involved in theft of passenger belongings, he added. (NSS)
