Delhi court to record Irom Sharmila’s statement on October 6

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday set October 6 as the date for recording the statement of Manipuri activist Irom Sharmila in a case related to her allegedly attempting suicide during her fast-unto-death here in 2006.

Metropolitan Magistrate Akash Jain set October 6 for recording Sharmila’s statement.

The court on June 6 finished recording the statements of prosecution witnesses.

Sharmila has been on a fast for about 12 years, demanding repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.

The court on March 4, 2013, framed charges against Sharmila, popularly known as the “Iron Lady”, for attempting to commit suicide and put her on trial after she refused to plead guilty.

However, Sharmila denied that she attempted suicide while fasting at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
