Demonitisation: 50-yr-old woman robbed of Rs.1.83 lakh cash while waiting in deposit queue

“Nobody even came forward for help, fearing they would lose their place in the queue”

Guargaon: 50-year-old Nirmala Devi waiting in the queue was robbed of Rs. 1.83 Lakh outside a branch of Punjab National Bank in Gurgaon on Thursday.

Nirmala Devi was waiting to deposit her savings in now scrapped Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 notes.

She was standing at the end of the queue, when a man came to her, said something and before she could respond, snatched the cloth bag she was carrying and fled.

“Ours is a joint family, and I had come with the cash saved up by everyone to deposit it in our account, and also exchange some of the invalid currency for valid notes,” Nirmala said.

“I have lost all my savings. I was shocked to see that when I raised the alarm, nobody came forward to help me,” the woman wrote in her police complaint.

A case has been registered regarding the incident and police is investigating the CCTV footage.
