Dhoni insists India `top contender` for World T20 title

Johannesburg: India’s limited-overs skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni believes that his side are the top contender in the shorter format and will be one of the favourites to win the next month’s World T20 to be played in India.

Earlier, Indian ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s magical spell guided India to a comfortable victory in the third and the final T20, thereby clinching the three-match series 2-1 at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

The 34-year-old said that the ace Indian spinner would provide his side with the added benefit when they come into action in the upcoming T20 pinnacle event, Sport24 reported.

Talking about his strategy for the World T20, Dhoni said that they would try to dismiss the opposition’s big hitters as early as possible as his side are well aware of playing in the home conditions

Describing the knockout stages as a `lottery` cricket, Dhoni, however, called on his side to be at their absolute best. He insisted that it would be essential for his side to maintain consistency in the knockouts.

The ICC World T20 is slated to be held between March 8 to April 3, with the Dhoni-led side playing their opening match against New Zealand on March 15. (ANI)
