Documentaries on ‘Kashmiri student’, ‘Rohit Vemula’ to be screened by Ambedkar University Students’ Union

New Delhi: Following the footsteps of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in Kerala, the students union of Ambedkar University in Delhi have announced their decision to screen the three documentaries that were banned from being screened at the Short Film Festival in Kerala.

The Information and Broadcast Ministry banned The Unbearable Being of Lightness (a documentary of deceased PhD scholar Rohith Vemula), In The Shade of The Fallen Chinar, (which is about the lives of young Kashmiri student artists) and March-March-March (based on the JNU protests), on grounds of the films threatening “the integrity of the country”.

In a press release, the Ambedkar Students Association said, each of the films exposes some of the most shameful chapters in the history of India under the Modi regime. The ASA, which in its glorious 25-year history has fought such tyranny many times, has decided to once again take on this monster by its horns. It has been decided that the ASA will screen all three films in all the campuses where it has units. With this decision, we challenge the attempts of this government to suppress voices of dissent.

Days after the I&B Ministry denied permission for screening of three films at the festival, the SFI decided to screen two of the three films in at least 150 campuses across the state.

In an official statement, SFI said, the festival has been going on for the last 10 years. It is a gathering of artists and cultural activists who hold different views. The festival is also a mark of the diversity of India, and the RSS is infringing on this diversity.

The SFI declared that the campuses in Kerala, though, are not ready to “bow their heads before the Sangh Parivar agenda.”
