Ankara: Miss Turkey 2006 Merve Buyuksarac was sentenced to 14 months in prison on Tuesday for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after sharing a satirical poem about him on social networks.

The court found Buyuksarac, 27, guilty of insulting a public official, Efe news reported.

The general prosecution had requested four and a half years in prison for the model, who during the trial argued that she only shared the poem because it seemed funny and that at no time did she intend to insult President Erdogan.
