UP Girl killed and dragged into water by a crocodile in National Chambal Sanctuary

KANPUR: A 20-yr-old girl from UP was killed after a crocodile attacked her while she was bathing on the river banks. The incident took place in National Chambal Sanctuary’s Chakarnagar area in UP’s Etawah district on Tuesday.

Neeraj was accompanied by her parents but they could not save her as the crocodile disappeared in within minutes with Neerajā€™s body in water.

The Sanctuary officials said the local authorities tried searching for the body with the help of divers but could not find it.

According to the Police, Neeraj visited the river bank with her parents, to perform a ritual as she was observing the Ekadashi fast.

According to the Environmentalists, this is the nesting season for the crocodiles and the attack could be one of the reasons to protect their eggs.

“Crocodiles lay eggs in this season. The victim may have unknowingly ventured near the crocodile’s nest in the sanctuary. Female crocodiles get aggressive in this season as they protect eggs or hatchlings. People shouldn’t venture near a river bank in summers,” said Anil Patel, divisional forest officer, Chambal.

About 500 crocodiles were recorded living in the National Chambal Sanctuary according to the released statistics, Times of India reported.
