Health benefits of breastfeeding explained to mothers

Kolkata: Awareness campaigns with special emphasis on the health benefits of breastfeeding were held to educate mothers and anganwadi workers during the ‘World Breastfeeding Week’ that concluded in West Bengal today.

Elaborate discussions on exclusive breastfeeding of newborns till the age of six months, followed by complementary feeding along with breastfeeding till the baby attains the age of 2 years were held at various places in the state, an official release said here today.

Special campaigns were held at Jagaccha, Sankrail, Uluberia-II in Howrah district, Sutahata in East Midnapore district and Barrackpore in North 24-Parganas district as a part of the programme in the state.

Ishita Roy Palit, demonstration officer of Community Food and Nutrition Extension Unit, Kolkata, told the new mothers about the right composition of complementary food.

Explaining the meaning of ‘Nutrition Flag’, she said, “Children nowadays do not like to eat green vegetables.”

“It is not good and mothers should include all types of food in a child’s diet,” she said.

Mothers and aanganwadi workers also took part in a drama that highlighted the health benefits of breastfeeding for infants as well as lactating mothers.
