Hundreds beat up Usman Ansari, set his home ablaze after carcass of a cow found

Villagers slit the throat of the cow to create the impression that Usman had killed it.

RANCHI: Hundreds beat up Muslim man in the BJP-ruled Jharkhand state after a dead cow was reportedly found outside his house on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Beria Hatiatand village in Deori area in Jharkhand’s Giridih district, nearly 200 km from Ranchi.

A mob of approximately 100 men attacked the house of Usman Ansari after some villagers found the dead cow outside his house.

According to police, Ansari runs a dairy and the cow belongs to him died a natural death after an illness. But before Ansari could dispose the carcass, the villagers slit the throat of the cow to create the impression that Usman had killed it, reported The Telegraph.

In less than 30 minutes, the mob had swelled to nearly 1,000 and had beaten up Ansari and set fire to a part of his house.

By the time the police reached the spot, the incident had ended and Ansari and his family were rescued and taken to hospital, as per ANI reports.

The mob also pelted stones in which about 50 policemen were also injured, reported Indian Express.

“The police struggled for more than two hours to rescue Ansari and his family members,” said Jharkhand Police Spokesperson and ADG (Operations) RK Mullik. “When the police tried to take him to hospital, there was resistance from the crowd. There was heavy stone-pelting.”

Police fired a number of shots in the air to to disperse the mob.

“Our men and officials braved the crowd and immediately rescued Ansari and his family members. We had to open fire in the air,” said R K Mullik.

Over 200 security personnel have been deployed in the area to maintained law and order.
