Husband gets life term for murder, dowry harassment

Palwal : The additional district and sessions court here sentenced a man to life imprisonment, finding him guilty of his wife’s murder and dowry harassment.

The court of justice Amit Kumar also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict, Raju.

Village Khambi resident Amar Singh’s younger sister Guddi had got married to Raju on September 25, 2013.

Her in-laws and husband had been harassing her for dowry ever since, a police spokesperson said, citing the FIR filed in the case at Hasanpur police station.

On September 23, 2015 Singh was informed that Guddi has suffered a “heart attack”. When he reached Hasanpur, Guddi was already dead, the official said.

However, Singh claimed to have noticed injury marks on her sister’s neck which made him suspect a foul play in the death and he approached the police.

Police had initially filed a dowry harassment case but later changed it to dowry death as evidence emerged against Guddi’s in-laws and husband, the official said.

Holding Raju guilty in the case, the court awarded him life imprisonment along with the fine, the spokesperson said.

The court also said that if the convict fails to pay the fine, another year be added to his jail term and extra fine of Rs 2,000 be slapped against him.
