Gurgaon: Over 1,000 people across Gurgaon have been booked for various offences in connection with the violent Jat protests demanding job quotas, police said on Thursday.
Over three dozen FIRs were registered at various police stations in this city against people from a particular community for blocking roads, an official said.
Many of them have been booked by name but police refused to provide further details.
Witnesses had told police that among those who took part in the protests were those who came in SUVs, wearing gold chains and rings as well as branded clothes — all demanding reservation in jobs.
“Gurgaon is a city of mixed culture but a section of people tried to disturb law and orders in this ‘mini India’,” a source told IANS. “These people have been booked.”
Gurgaon Commissioner of Police Navdeep Singh Virk told IANS: “We have registered FIRs. We can’t share details at this stage.”
He said further legal action against the accused would be taken soon.
Most FIRs related to wrongful restraint, common intent, obstruction of public and defying orders of public servants. Some were also charged with rioting. No one has been arrested yet.
