New Delhi: Hundreds of journalists marched on the streets towards the Supreme Court in the latest battle over freedom of expression and for protection from violent nationalist groups backing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
The protest rally came after the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar on sedition charges for organising a rally marking the anniversary of the execution of a Muslim Kashmiri leader.
Nearly 800 journalists demanded the investigation into recent attacks against reporters in the court complex in police presence.
The journalists, shouted the slogans against the Modi Government and submitted a memorandum to its, Registrar, seeking cancellation of licences of lawyers
involved in the assault.
Journalists were also called as ‘traitors’
and ‘terrorists’, while being attacked in Patiala House court complex.
The memorandum said. “We demand the intervention of the highest court of the land to take appropriate action against the advocates involved in the assault. ”
They also said that no arrest has been made after the assault. They also demanded the court to refer the CCTV footage of the incident.
