Minister for Municipal Administration K. Taraka Ramarao today dispelled apprehensions about an alarming situation for water supply in Hyderabad City as there was sufficient quantities of storage water was available in the source reservoirs for providing normal water supply.
Stating this during question hour in the Assembly, KTR pointed out that from the Krishna scheme 270 million gallons per day and 172 million gallons per day from Godavari scheme through Yellampally barrage could be drawn. Presently 404 Mgd is being supplied from all sources compared to last year supply of 355 Mgd. Further an additional 28 Mgd from Krishna scheme and 58 Mgd from Godavari scheme will be supplemented from April onwards, he explained.
Stoutly denying that at present many areas under GHMC limits were not getting proper water supply, KTR explained that there were 4.74 lakh service connections in the seven divisions of the core city. At present, water supply was being provided on alternate days in the core city ensuring the 150 LPCD as per norms. Daily water supply is also being provided to the BPL families in the slum areas wherever it was feasible, he added.
KTR further said in the peripheral circles, there are seven divisions having 4.30 lakh connections. About four lakh connections are being provided with alternate water supply ibesides daily supplies for BPL families in the feasible areas. In order to improve the water supply, the ongoing project was being expedited to be commissioned from April onwards in phases so that improved water supply would be ensured to all service connections in the peripheral circles, he added.
He further pointed out that as per the CPHEEO norms (Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organization) of the Union Ministry of Urban Development, the per capita water supply to be provided for domestic purposes is 150 LPCD with 15 percent UFW. Accordingly, the quantum of water required for the present population of 95 lakh in Hyderabad City for domestic purposes was assessed to be 360 Mgd. However, presently 372 Mgd of water supply was being provided in the city, he added.
In order to supplement additional water, the Minister explained, one transmission main which required rehabilitation under Krishna Project is being taken up and would be completed by the end of March through which additional 28 Mgd would be provided into distribution system for improvement of water supply. Further additional 58 Mgd would be supplemented in a phased manner into the peripheral circles on completion of the ongoing project from April onwards, he added.
KTR said HMWS&SB has also taken up the summer action plan at a cost of Rs 5.8 crore to attend to repairs of hand bore-wells, power bore-wells, valves, junction works, providing additional tanker trips etc to cope with summer contingency problems and ensure proper water supply in the city. Senior officers are deployed to monitor the shortfalls of water supply to any reservoir or division and to ensure sufficient quantities for the next day supplies. Also the flow rates through bulk flow meters are being monitored through SCADA system from the head office, he explained. (NSS)
