The 443 km-long highway was opened by Indian army authorities for traffic on Saturday after remaining snowbound at Zojila Pass, 3,530 metres (11,581 feet) above sea level, for the past six months. The pass connects Kashmir with the Buddhist-dominated Ladakh region, a tourist destination known for its monasteries, landscapes and mountains. Srinagar [India]: The Leh-Srinagar highway will be re-opened for traffic today after remaining closed for more than five months due to heavy snowfall.

Due to unprecedented snow for first time in last five years, clearing up the road on the Leh-Srinagar highway for traffic was a mammoth task this time.

The road usually opens around 15th May but this year, timely planning and sincere efforts have led to opening of the road on 5th May itself.

The opening will facilitate movement of the people and also more importantly, restocking of commodities of daily use as the stocks have depleted over five months of closure from December last year. (ANI)
