Man arrested for throwing water on Olympic flame in Brazil

Brazil: A 27-year-old man has been arrested in Brazil on Sunday after attempting to throw a bucket of water on the Olympic Torch.

Police arrested Marcelino Mateus Silva Proença at the scene for damaging public property. The crime can carry a sentence of between six months and three years in prison.

Video posted to social media showed Proença was standing on the sidewalk when he threw the bucket of water towards the torch. He was arrested at home shortly after fleeing the scene.

The incident comes a week after a rare jaguar was shot and killed after being used in an Olympic torch ceremony.

During interrogation the man said “it was a joke, a dare on Facebook,” Early last week Proença posted a photo on his Facebook page of a man holding a bucket with a caption that read: “Waiting for the torch to pass.”
