Hyderabad: There are no takers for thousands of 2BHK houses, constructed under the Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (Vambay) and Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission in Ranga Reddy, Medchal and Hyderabad districts.
Under these two mass housing schemes, the beneficiaries have to pay 10 per cent of the cost of the house. Since the 2BHK houses are free, no one is coming forward with the other two schemes.
The GHMC constructed 41,839 houses under Jnnurm, of which 31,963 were handed over. 4,958 houses were completed under Vambay in the GHMC area and 2,705 were handed over, reports DC.
Beneficiaries have yet to pay a total of Rs 132.35 crore (Rs 96.20 crore under Jnnurm and Rs 36.15 crore under Vambay).
There is no progress seen in the collection of the beneficiaries’ share of Jnnurm and Vambay schemes.
Officials said that not handing over the completed houses was posing serious problems like theft of doors, windows, electrical fixtures and damage to water supply and sanitary lines. They said the vacant houses were prone to vandalism and unauthorized encroachments.
Furthermore, the houses under the Jnnurm and Vambay are one-bedroom houses measuring between 270 sq ft and 370 sq ft. The state government’s houses being built for the poor are 560 sq. ft and have two bedrooms.
