Power demand soars as mercury rises in Delhi

New Delhi: Peak power demand in the city soared to a record 6,227 MW today as Delhiites reeled under sweltering heat.

The peak demand of 6,227 MW was reached at 3.03 pm as the hot and humid weather forced people to remain indoors, a power department official said.

The day was cloudy and sunny in patches in the national capital which witnessed sultry weather conditions. The maximum temperature settled at 39.4 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season’s average, while the minimum was recorded at 30.5 degrees, two notches above the normal, said a MeT department official.

The humidity level oscillated between 75 and 50 per cent.

The city had set the record of highest ever peak demand of 6,526 MW on June 6. A day before, it was 6,361 MW, the second highest.

The power distribution companies expect the demand to go up to 6,600 MW this summer.
