Security forces battle militants in J&K, policeman killed

Srinagar/Jammu: Gun battles broke out on Sunday between security forces and militants in Kashmir’s Bandipora and Kupwara districts, police said. In yet another gunfight, in Poonch district of Jammu region, a policeman was killed.

In Poonch, militants opened firing from an under-construction mini-secretariat building near the Army’s 93 Brigade headquarters in the Poonch town around 8 a.m., police said.

“The militants have been surrounded and all escape routes have been sealed”, a senior police officer told IANS, adding that the gunfight was continuing.

In Kupwara, an encounter started in Nowgam sector of the Line of Control (LoC), a senior police officer said.

In Bandipora, another encounter took place near the LoC in Gurez sector.

Both the gunfights were continuing, the officer added.
