Bengaluru: Mauritian couple, Murugessan and Malegay had lost their 12- year -old son. God blessed them with a baby boy again but fate was not merciful on them. The newly born baby, Habilen, was suffering from a rare live condition, Progressive Familial Intre-Hepartic Cholestasis (PFIC).

The boy was admitted in hospital in Manipal Hospital. He underwent a rare liver transplant surgical operation using a piece of his 19- year-old sister, Noguny’s liver.

Noguny donated a portion of her liver weighting 250 grams which was implanted in the baby after carefully removing the diseased liver.

The surgeon who conducted the operation, Dr. Sudarshan Ballal, Chairman, Manipal Hospitals described that Habilen’s case was a rare one. He applauded the sacrifice made by the sister of the patient for donating a portion of her liver.
