TN cabinet urges Centre to confer Bharat Ratna on Jayalaithaa

Chennai [India]: The Tamil Nadu cabinet under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister O. Paneerselvam passed a resolution on Saturday requesting the Centre to award late chief minister J. Jayalalithaa with Bharat Ratna.

Among other things, the Cabinet also declared that a memorial in the name of Jayalalithaa will be built at the cost of Rs.15 crore.

The government also decided to rename the MGR memorial as ‘ Bharat Ratna Dr.MGR and Jayalalithaa memorial’.

The state government further requested the Centre to install a full-sized bronze statue on the Parliament campus.

Jayalalithaa, 68, who was admitted to Apollo Hospitals under the complaints of dehydration on September 22, died on December 5 after suffering cardiac arrest.

Her body was buried beside her mentor and former chief minister M.G. Ramachandran at Marina Beach, M.G.R memorial. (ANI)
