Two hospitalised in campus scuffle in Burdwan

Burdwan: Two activists, stated to be of Students Federation of India (SFI), were hospitalised following a scuffle between the Left-wing activists and non-teaching staff in the Burdwan University today.

An attending doctor of the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital said the two were admitted to hospital and their condition was stable.

The SFI and district CPI(M) leadership claimed at least 15 members, including the hospitalised two, got injured in the unprovoked assault by the members of Siksha Bandhu Samity and some outsiders as the students were on a fast before the administrative building in the campus.

They alleged the attackers were led by local Trinamool Congress leader Sitaram Mukherjee.

TMC, however, denied its involvement in any such incident.

Some members of media, present at the spot, also bore the brunt of the clash and suffered injuries and the TMC and CPI(M) both condemned any attack on press.

A senior police officer, when contacted, said though he heard about the clash no official complaint was lodged by any side as yet.

Three days back SFI members, protesting the publication of erroneous results, allegedly ransacked the University premises prompting police lathicharge.

University Vice-chancellor Smriti Kumar Sarkar was not available for comments on today’s incident.
