Vijay Mallya has become ‘Double NRI’: Congress

New Delhi: Reiterating that the BJP-led NDA Government was shielding Vijay Mallya, the Congress Party on Monday alleged that the liquor baron has truly become a ‘Double NRI’ – ‘Non-Repaying Indian’ and ‘Non-Returning Indian’.

“Mallya was present in Parliament on March 1, reportedly, he met and spoke to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and entire country knows that he suddenly left the country the very next day. Circumstances suggest that Mallya was tipped to leave the country despite proceedings initiated by CBI, Banks, ED, SEBI, SFIO, Service Tax and Income Tax,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala told the media here.

“It is official now that Mallya, who has run away from India as in ‘Fair & Lovely Scheme’ of BJP government, has become truly a ‘ Double NRI’ – ‘Non-Repaying Indian’ and ‘Non-Returning Indian’,” he added.

He further criticised the government for failing to fulfill the promise of bringing black money back stashed in safe havens abroad within 100 days.

“The 130 crore people of India now understand the meaning of replacing CBI’s ‘Look Out Notice for Detention’ with ‘Look Out Notice for Information only’, meaning is clear – ‘you look, I go out’. Mallya, who is resting in London, is attacking everyone including media with only one thought – ‘Give me Loan, Leave me Alone’,” he added.

Surjewala posed five questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the claims about ‘transparency and accountability’ in government.

“How will Modi government confiscate this amount and take action for this patent illegality?” he asked.

Surjewala further urged the ruling dispensation to rise above rhetoric and face the truth.

“We urge it to put an end to its ‘Fair and Lovely Scheme’ and take decisive action against Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya in national interest,” he added.

The Congress has given a notice on the matter in the Rajya Sabha, saying the government was ‘framing innocent people while offenders such as the former Kingfisher boss were allowed to leave the country’. (ANI)
