Islamabad: A Pakistani cleric was suspended after pictures of him with social media sensation Qandeel Baloch went viral.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Religious Affairs suspended Mufti Abdul Qawi’s Ruet-e-Hilal Committee membership for taking selfies with Baloch.
A spokesman said: “Qavi will not be allowed to attend meetings of the Ruet-i-Hilal Committee and National Ulema Mushaikh Council until further orders. Mufti Qavi’s fate will be decided after the opinion of the National Ulema Mushaikh Council regarding his selfies and behavior,” the spokesman said.
Qandeel, in one of the selfies can be seen posing with the Mufti’s hat, while Qavi was seen holding a cell phone.
The blame game started after pictures and videos of them together went viral on social media.
Qandeel said Mufti Qavi had invited her to meet him in a hotel for ‘iftar’ and that Qavi had been persuading her to meet him for quite some time.
She further claim that the scholar had “proposed” to her “twice” during the meeting.
However, the cleric denied the claims by Qandeel and said that she was the one who had requested the meeting.
“I met Qandeel on her insistence and she has promised me that not only she will fast during Ramzan, she will also offer her prayers regularly,” he said.
