Study in US: Bad news for students

New Delhi: ‘Study in US’ which is one of the goals of many international students including Indians. However, the US is likely to tighten the norms. The authorities may reduce the duration of optional practical training (OPT) program.

According to the report published in The News Minute, Trump administration may reduce OPT duration.

OPT Program

It may be mentioned that under OPT Program, international students belonging to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) streams are allowed to work for one year after completion of studies. This duration can be extended to two more years.

Although under OPT, students do not get huge emoluments, they get work experience.

A group of people in the US is against the program as they alleged that it steals jobs from US citizens.

ICE

It may be mentioned that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is responsible for the OPT program.

As per the data of the international students in the US, out of 2.02 lakh students in the US, more than 70% belong to STEM streams.
