JNU Violence: Masked woman, suspects identified

New Delhi: While JNU students, staff are demanding justice for the mob violence that left 36 individuals injured, a Special Investigation Team of the Delhi Police probing the case has identified the masked woman who was wielding a stick in the assault video on students, staff at the Varsity.

According to reports, the woman in the video wearing a check shirt, covering her face with a blue scarf, is a student of Delhi University, police said without revealing her name, News18 reports.

In the video and images that went viral on the internet, a masked woman was seen wielding a stick and threatening students along with two other men inside JNU’s Sabarmati hostel.

The woman’s photos were widely shared by Left outfits following the violence, with many identifying her as an ABVP member.

Police sources said the woman will be soon served a notice to join the Delhi Police probe into violence at JNU.

Probing the matter, DCP (Crime Branch) Joy Tirkey, In-charge the SIT has released names of eight suspects in the violence.

The police revealed eight were identified as members of Left-student outfits while the affiliations of the other two who belong to the ABVP were not made public by the Police.

On the other hand, the JNU administration on Monday issued an advisory to teachers to resume their classes in the interest of students.

“The above call for ‘non-cooperation’ not only goes against the efforts of the administration for restoration of normalcy in the campus and resumption of academic activities but also reflects the intention of JNUTA to disrupt normal functioning of the university,” the varsity’s advisory read.
