Mainstreaming Madrasas: Urdu University teams up with UNFPA

Hyderabad: United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has collaborated with Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) in a project on Adolescence Education Program (AEP) in Madrasas of Bihar. UNFPA is initiating the program in partnership with Bihar State Madarsa Education Board and Department of Education, Government of Bihar.

The launch ceremony of the project will be held on 11th January 2019 at 10.30 am in the Conference Room, Administrative Building MANUU.

Dr Venkatesh Srinivasan, Assistant Country Representative, UNFPA; Dr Nadeem Noor, UNFPA, Patna; and Mr Akhtar Feroz, Chairman, Bihar State Madrasa Education Board will grace the launch ceremony. Dr Mohammad Aslam Parvaiz, Vice-Chancellor, will preside over the function.

According to Prof. Mohd Shahid, Project Director and Professor, Department of Social Work, MANUU AEP aims at the training, capacity building and lifelong learning of adolescents studying at Wastania level (classes 6-8) Madrasas in Purnia division of Bihar. The project covers a total 757 Madrasas in four districts of Purnia division namely Kishanganj, Araria, Purnia and Katihar.

MANUU being an important partner has been mandated for Training of Nodal Teachers, Supportive Supervision and Implementation Research. Training & capacity building component of the project shall be coordinated by Prof. Faiz Ahmad, Principal, CTE Darbhanga whereas Implementation Research Component shall be coordinated by Dr M. Vanaja Department of Education and Training, MANUU.

Initially, the project is for one year (1 January to 31 December 2019) with allotted resources of $111595USD covering 373 Madrasas and 746 Madrasas teachers (Nodal teachers) of two districts namely Purnia and Katihar. A Multi-Partner Meet cum Workshop on Project Planning and Implementation is scheduled for January 10 & 11. The representatives from UNFPA, Bihar State Madrasa Education Board, Jamia Millia Islamia shall participate in this meeting.
