Man slapped with Rs 128 Cr Electricity bill for using light, fan

Chamri: A man in UP was slapped with more than Rs 128 crore electricity bill for using just fan and regular house lights.

According to reports, Shamim a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Chamri village who used to live with his wife was charged a whopping amount of Rs 128 crores towards electricity bill failing which the department disconnected their connection, TN reports.

Shamim did all he could to make the officials understand the amount to be rectified but the officials of the electricity department forced him to pay the bill of Rs Rs. 128, 45, 95,444.

“No one listens to our pleas, how will we submit that amount? When we went to complain about it, we were told that they won’t resume our electricity connection unless we pay the bill,” Shamim told new sources.

His monthly bill was never more than Rs 700 or Rs 800 and now the electricity department mistakenly handed over the bill of the entire city to him.

Shamim’s wife, Khairu Nisha, questions how can the bill be so high when the  house only has a few lights and a fan.

Meanwhile an engineer of the electricity department said the bill must have been a “technical fault” and shall soon be rectified.

“This must be a technical fault. If they provide us with the bill we will issue them an updated one after rectifying the technical fault in the system. This is no big deal. Technical faults do take place,” the engineer.
