Hyderabad: An eight-year-old boy, Syed Farhan, who was battling with the deadly bone cancer for two years got his life back on track following treatment at Mahdi Nawaz Jung Cancer Hospital in Red Hills, Hyderabad.
The treatment by a team of dedicated experts could be carried out thanks to the financial backing provided by an NGO, Helping Hand Foundation.
Farhan, a native of Warangal, is the son of a daily wage earner Syed Ghouse who earns Rs 200 daily. “It was impossible for me to get Farhan treated,” the father said.
Farhan complained of severe pain in the knee in January 2018. While routine examination showed a mass and swelling further investigations revealed that the boy had Ewing’s Sarcoma, a relatively aggressive form of malignant bone cancer in children.
The boy underwent a highly complex excision of the tumor, Titanium was implanted for the bone graft.
Dr. Umakanth Goud who headed the team that performed surgery said that the boy was suffering from a deadly disease. If he had not been given the timely treatment the disease would have worsened endangering the life of the patient.
Dr. Mujtaba Ali, Assistant Professor Surgical Oncology, said, “The tumor board decision was crucial as this required a multi-disciplinary team comprising Ortho Oncologist, Surgical Oncologist, and Plastic Surgeon. They were all required to ensure that the soft tissue and vascular structure remain intact.”
The Helping Hand Foundation (HHF) contributed Rs. 1 lakh. The remaining amount of Rs 1.5 lakh was given under the Aryogyasri Funds allocated to the hospital.
Though the surgery was done on January 7 followed by regular treatment the boy started going to school a few days ago.
