12% reservations for Muslims – Legal impediments

Hyderabad: Govt. of Telangana which has faced many legal impediments during the past two years of its regime is now facing once again legal complications in order to provide 12% reservations for Muslims which it had promised in its election manifesto.

CM of Telangana State, Mr. K. Chandrasekhara Rao has an intention to provide reservations to Muslims. He has instructed Mr. Rama Krishna Reddy, Advocate General of Telangana to study the legal matters pertaining to reservations in Tamil Nadu state so that a similar provision could be made in Telangana also. In Tamil Nadu, 69% reservations have been provided by amending constitution of India. This case is pending with the Supreme Court. If Govt. of Telangana decides to provide 12% reservations to Muslims and STs, the total quantum of reservations would reach 58%. It remains to be seen how Govt. of Telangana amends the concerned legal provisions to fulfill its election promise in order to eradicate backwardness of the Muslims in social, economic and educational fields.
