Ahmedabad-Puri express travels without engine, railway staff suspended

Ahmedabad: In an unusual incident in Odisha’s Titlagarh, coaches of train Ahmedabad-Puri Express accidentally travelled around 10 kilometres without the engine. The train was detached for reversal at the station on Saturday when it started slipping down and covered the distance. An official said the train had moved due to non-application of skid brakes.

The railway sources informed that the coaches moved at around 10 pm without the engine. A spokesperson for East Coast Railway said, no passenger was hurt when the train moved towards Kesinga during the process of attaching the engine to the other end of train.

The alert staff put stones in the way of the train in an effort to stop it, the railway spokesperson said, adding the section from Titlagarh towards Kesinga has a downward slope. Moreover, the staff who could not manage to follow the engine shunting procedure have been suspended, he added.

An enquiry has been ordered by Divisional Railway Manager, Sambalpur, Jaideep Gupta.
