Is BJP becoming secular?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing newly elected members of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance for the first time at the NDA meet, soon after the Lok Sabha election results, said minorities had been cheated by the opposition and that it must stop immediately. “We have worked for sabka saath, sabka vikas, now sabka vishwas is our mantra,” he said.

Addressing at the parliament’s Central Hall, Modi said, “The way the poor have been cheated, the minorities have been deceived the same way. It would have been good if their education, their health had been taken care of. In 2019, I expect you to punch a hole in that deception. We have to earn their trust.”

Initially, it was thought to be Modi’s lip services but the subsequent moves taken by the government shows that it was not lip service but an organised plan.

Following the speech, BJP’s attitude towards minorities seemed changed. A few days after Modi’s speech, BJP leader Giriraj Singh had given a controversial statement with regard to Nitish Kumar and Iftar party. On this, party president and home minister Amit Shah admonished him. The changed attitude of BJP was more apparent on the occasion of Eid when the Eid greetings were poured in by BJP leaders. Not only this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke the record by sending Eid wishes in Urdu.

To everyone’s surprise, some BJP leaders in Mumbai distributed 1000 burqas to Muslim women as ‘Eid gift’.

Malegaon accused Pragya Thakur gave a high voltage shock to Muslims by meeting city Qazi in Bhopal.

It seems that the BJP is trying hard to beat parties like Congress, SP, BSP, RJD in the match of secularism. If this continues like this, merely donning skull cap and organising Iftar parties will not be sufficient for parties like Congress to pose secular, they could also need to offer namaz. Jagan Mohan Ready has already begun the race.
