BJP candidate Pragya Thakur in troubled waters over ‘curse’ remark

Bhopal: Malegaon blast accused and BJP candidate Pragya Singh Thakur from Bhopal has landed herself in trouble waters over her controversial remarks against police officer Hemant Karkare as EC is preparing to issue a notice to her.

Address the party workers in Bhopal she claimed that Karkare died during the 26/11 terror attack as she had “cursed” him for torturing her, News18 reports.

“We took suo motu cognisance of the statement and sought a report from the assistant returning officer (ARO) on the matter. We got the report this morning and we are going to issue notices, which are returnable within 24 hours, to the organiser of the programme and the person who made the statement,” District Election Officer and Bhopal Collector Sudam Khade told PTI.

According to EC officials usage of objectionable language to defame any person was strictly prohibited yet Thakur violated the model code of conduct.

Thakur (48) is currently out on bail after she was discharged by a court on charges under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the 2008 case.

But she is still under trial under for other criminal provisions, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

With this criminal record, the saffron party has fielded her on Wednesday from the Bhopal seat.

She will be contesting with Congress heavyweight and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijay Singh.

When opposition demanded apology from Thukar, the saffron party distanced itself from her comments, saying it was her “personal view” which she might have made “due to years of physical and mental torture”.
