Canada revokes the honorary citizenship of Aung San Suu Kyi over Rohingya crisis

Canada’s parliament voted to effectively remove Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi of her honorary Canadian citizenship over the Rohingya crisis which Ottawa had given the long-detained democracy advocate and Nobel laureate the rare honour in 2007.

Adam Austen, spokesman for Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said “In 2007, the House of Commons granted Aung San Suu Kyi the status of an honorary Canadian citizen. Today, the House unanimously passed a motion to remove this status.”

He said, “We will continue to support the Rohingya by providing humanitarian assistance, imposing sanctions against Myanmar’s generals and demanding that those responsible be held accountable before a competent international body.”

A brutal genocide that started last year due to which more than 700,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee from Myanmar into neighbouring country Bangladesh, where they now live in crowded refugee camps. The refugees fear of returning to Myanmar despite a repatriation deal fearing the genocide.
