Congress demands ban on Padmavati if history is distorted, BJP seeks stay on it

Mumbai: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s epic, Padmavati, is under a constant mayhem. From destroying the sets to burning the posters and recently a Rangoli, featuring Deepika Padukone, was vandalized by ‘activists’.

As per a report by The Indian Express, BJP seeks a temporary stay on Padmavati’s release that is scheduled to be screened on December 1. The film features Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmini, Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji.

BJP concerns that the film may hurt the sentiments of Kshatriya community as it might contain a romantic angle between the two leads. The party to soon write to the Election Commission, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the Central government requesting the same.

“We are writing to the ECI, CBFC and the Centre, seeking to stop the film’s release for a temporary period till the issue is resolved,” BJP spokesperson IK Jadeja told the publication on Wednesday.

“The state is set to witness elections and in such an environment it is imperative that there is no controversy related to any community,” Jadeja said.

Congress’s stance over Padmavati:

Senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil said, “With elections round the corner, a Minister from BJP has written to the Election Commission seeking a ban on ‘Padmavati’ till the elections are over. It is your government, write to the PM.”

He also suggested censoring the objectionable content in the movie after a special screening for community leaders.

“Also just postponing the release will not assuage the feelings of a community. We demand that if there has been the distortion of history as claimed, the movie should not be released at all,” Gohil added.
